Beech Mountain: A Calm & Cool Retreat

Avoid the Crowds

Ready to trade packed shorelines for panoramic views? Beech Mountain gives your family a different kind of spring break. One where you can actually hear the wind rustling through the trees and birds chirping.

Spring hits differently in the highest town in Eastern America. Forests turn green again. Wildflowers push through and the trails come to life. May is “Hike On Month”. Beech Mountain, an Outdoor NC Trail Town, celebrates its ample trail system and invites visitors to explore all month long.

You don’t need to be an expert hiker. From casual woodland strolls to challenging summit climbs, Beech Mountain’s trails, cater to hikers of every age and ability.

Start at the Emerald Outback Trail Park. More than seven miles of interconnected trails move through high-elevation forest and scenic overlooks. It feels secluded, but easy to access. Nearby, the Wild Iris Trail keeps things gentle, following historic roadbeds through lush greenery and seasonal blooms. Waterfall chasers can combine the Buckeye Lake Loop and Falls Trail for a rewarding trek that leads to the 20-foot Buckeye Creek Falls.

With no crowds. Just forested pathways, blooming wildflowers, and abundant wildlife. Spring on Beech Mountain is simple in the best way.

Beat the Summer Heat

If you dreaming of escaping the sweltering temperatures, look no further than Beech Mountain. At 5,506 feet in elevation the air is crisp, the views are breathtaking, and the temperatures rarely climb above the high 70s, making Beech Mountain the coolest hot spot for everything outdoors.

Memorial Day weekend kicks things off with the Mile High Kite Festival. This annual tradition draws families to the meadow to enjoy live music, craft and food vendors and to fill the sky with colorful kites.

After the festival, head over to the Beech Mountain Resort, which doubles as a lift-assisted downhill mountain bike park in the summer. Be sure to take a scenic chairlift ride to the summit, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the High Country. Once at the top, you can take in a round of disc golf or grab a drink and enjoy live music on the deck of 5506’ Skybar.

The outdoor adventure continues at the Buckeye Lake Recreation Area which provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching in a peaceful alpine setting, perfect for families craving fresh air and wide-open spaces.

On Beech Mountain kids have plenty to do without stretching your budget. The Mountaineer Adventure Tower features a 3-story ropes course and thrilling 25-foot slide. Add gem mining, mini-golf, an arcade, and multiple playgrounds. The Buckeye Recreation Center rounds it out with tennis, pickleball, basketball a workout facility and indoor games.

If a vibrant live music scene is your thing, Beech Mountain has you covered with various free concerts every weekend and the ticketed Beech Mountain Resort’s Summer Concert Series-featuring nationally acclaimed headliners.

Summer fades into a colorful fall with two standout events. August brings Crafts on the Green where local artists set up by Fred’s Gazebo with handmade goods, food and live music. September leans into nostalgia with Autumn at Oz, an annual festival, which celebrates the iconic Land of Oz theme park that once operated on the mountain’s highest peak.
