Pella, Iowa: A Flavorful, Fun-filled Escape

As the nation gears up to celebrate its big 250th birthday, are you looking for a getaway that steps off the beaten path? Forget the usual coastal traffic jams. If you want a trip packed with legendary history, mouthwatering food, and epic outdoor adventures, the ultimate summer and fall escape is waiting for you in the heart of the Midwest. Welcome to Pella, Iowa—where classic Americana meets a vibrant, living Dutch culture that will completely change how you look at early life in America!

Walk with Wild West Legends (and Beneath Giant Sails!)

Did you know that before he became the most famous lawman of the O.K. Corral, a young Wyatt Earp ran the streets of Pella? It’s true! This summer and fall, you can walk exactly where this frontier icon walked by stepping into Pella Historical Museums. What started as a single building has blossomed into an immersive 22-building museum complex that transports you straight back to the 1840s.

Nestled right inside this charming village is Wyatt Earp’s Boyhood Home, where you can take a self-guided audio tour of the very rooms the Earp family inhabited during the Civil War. But that’s just the beginning of the complex’s jaw-dropping history.

Towering over the village is the magnificent Vermeer Windmill. Standing at a massive 124 feet tall, it is officially the largest working grain windmill in North America! You can tour its five floors, marvel at the massive spinning blades, and step out onto the deck for a spectacular, unforgettable view of the city.

The town’s deeply rooted Dutch heritage adds a beautiful, unexpected twist to our early American story, proving that the prairie was always a place where diverse cultures came together to build something extraordinary.

A Foodie Paradise: From Bakeries to Secrets Underground

Bring your appetite, because Pella’s food scene is a dream! Start your morning by following your nose to a local bakery for world-famous, flaky Dutch letters and artisanal gouda cheeses. For lunch, slide into one of our local restaurants for some comforting, nostalgic classics served with a massive side of genuine Midwest hospitality.

When evening rolls around, the culinary adventure gets even better. Cozy up for a spectacular dinner of American classics, and then hunt for a local hidden gem: De Kelder Speakeasy. Tucked away right beneath the city streets, this ultra-cool, candlelit underground speakeasy serves up expertly handcrafted cocktails. It’s the perfect spot to raise a glass to old-world charm and a fantastic night out!

Big Splash Energy at Lake Red Rock

Need to cool off after all that exploring? Just a quick five-minute drive from our historic downtown square lies Lake Red Rock—Iowa’s absolute largest lake.

Surrounded by jaw-dropping red sandstone bluffs and miles of lush trails, it’s a paradise for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Spend your summer days boating, jet-skiing, or lounging out on the sandy beaches. Planning an autumn trip instead? You’re in for a treat. As the weather cools, the lake transforms into a breathtaking canvas of oranges and golds, making it the perfect backdrop for hiking, biking, and wildlife watching.
