Small Town, Deep History: Savoring Yorktown’s Riverfront Life
April 10, 2026

A salute. A tribute. A tributary. In 1781, sand, sea, and ships converged at Yorktown, sealing the fate of the British and securing a victory for freedom. Today, the York River may separate one shore from another, but it continues to carry the enduring lessons of independence, valor, and unity.
Historic Yorktown is a rare destination where breathtaking natural beauty and defining moments in American history meet at every turn. It is the place where independence was won, and where every visit feels like a journey into the heart of the nation’s story.
Discover the drama and sacrifice of the Revolutionary War at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown and Yorktown Battlefield. Along Historic Main Street, stand before the towering Victory Monument to honor the decisive 1781 triumph.
At Yorktown Beach, the York River beckons with swimming, fishing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Climb aboard the Schooner Alliance II for a pirate adventure, a leisurely day sail, or a romantic sunset cruise. Take the helm, soak in the landscape, and pick up a little history lesson along the way.
After relishing the view, it’s time to taste the flavors of Yorktown’s shoreside dining. Coastal Thirst Beach Deli, Riverwalk Restaurant, Water Street Grille, and Yorktown Pub serve fresh seafood, classic American favorites, craft cocktails, and decadent desserts—all with tables overlooking the York River.
Riverwalk Landing satisfies visitors’ appetite for shopping. Charming boutiques offer everything from handcrafted folk art and gently owned books to beachy souvenirs and gourmet dog treats.
Riverwalk Landing is also the heart of many of Yorktown’s most memorable events. Each Saturday from April through October, Yorktown Market Days transforms the waterfront into a lively farmers market filled with fresh produce and artisan goods. Summer concerts, art shows, beer and wine festivals, and holiday celebrations bring music, creativity, and festive cheer to the historic shoreline.

In 2026, Yorktown will take on an even greater significance as three signature events commemorate the nation’s founding. From June 12–14, the Sail Yorktown Festival, an official SailVirginia℠ 2026 Affiliate Harbor event, will transform the York River into a breathtaking tableau of tall ships and military vessels. Visitors can enjoy free deck tours, living history demonstrations, family activities, and a sweeping symphony concert honoring America’s 250th anniversary.
On Independence Day, festivities begin with a patriotic parade along Historic Main Street and continue with a day of waterfront relaxation, local shopping, and family activities on Water Street. The evening culminates with a stirring bell-ringing ceremony, a live performance by Good Shot Judy, and a grand fireworks display illuminating the York River.
Then, from October 17–19, Victory Weekend brings the dramatic final days of the Revolutionary War back to life. Live artillery firings, immersive programs, and a special themed farmers market commemorate the siege that secured American independence and mark the path toward 2031, the 250th anniversary of that pivotal moment.

Just up the hill, Historic Main Street invites visitors to explore additional events, distinctive dining, unique shops, and historic homes that played their own roles in the nation’s founding. To see it all, hop aboard the free, ADA-accessible Yorktown Trolley or climb onto an old-fashioned Stanley Steamer Wagon for a charming and educational tour through the town’s past.
Yorktown also rewards those who prefer a slower pace. A stay at The Hornsby House Inn, Marl Inn Bed & Breakfast, Yorktown Cottages, or the Yorktown Beach Hotel allows guests to wake each morning in the heart of American history, just steps from the river that has witnessed it all.
