Smoke on the Water Puts Lake Murray & Columbia’s BBQ Scene in the National Spotlight

Barbecue has always been about more than the meat, sauce, and smoke. It is tradition, storytelling, community, and the people who gather around the table. This spring, those elements came together in a remarkable way as Smoke on the Water made its debut along the shores of Lake Murray, bringing some of the most respected names in barbecue to the heart of South Carolina.

Set against the waterfront backdrop of Putnam’s Harbor, Smoke on the Water was a celebration of Southern culinary culture and a reflection of how far the Columbia region’s food scene has come. Bringing together award-winning pitmasters, local favorites, live music, craft beverages, and lakeside hospitality, the event gave guests a rare opportunity to experience some of the very best barbecue in one place.

The headliners alone made it a destination-worthy event.

Robbie Robinson, owner of City Limits Barbeque in West Columbia, has quickly become one of the most respected pitmasters in the country. A 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist who was recently recognized by Southern Living for serving the South’s best barbecue, Robinson has helped redefine what modern South Carolina barbecue can be while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.
Joining him was Rodney Scott, one of the most influential figures in American barbecue. Scott’s dedication to whole-hog cooking and preservation of South Carolina’s barbecue heritage earned him the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2018. His impact extends far beyond the pit, helping introduce audiences across the country to the rich culinary traditions of the South.

Rounding out the trio was Myron Mixon, one of the most recognizable names in competitive barbecue. A five-time world barbecue champion, television personality, author, and educator, Mixon has spent decades mastering the craft and sharing his expertise with audiences around the world. During Smoke on the Water, guests heard directly from Mixon during a live Q&A session where he shared stories, techniques, and lessons learned throughout his legendary career.

Together, these barbecue icons represented generations of experience, innovation, and excellence.

Yet Smoke on the Water was equally focused on showcasing the talent found right here in the Midlands. Alongside Robinson, attendees enjoyed offerings from regional favorites including Peculiar Pig, Roy’s Grille, and 518 Smokehouse. Their participation highlighted the depth and diversity of the local barbecue community while providing visitors with a true taste of the region.

One of the event’s most anticipated moments was the collaboration between Robinson and Scott. Guests sampled a custom protein creation developed specifically for the festival, a culinary experience unlikely to be replicated anywhere else. It was the kind of partnership that reflected the event’s mission of honoring barbecue traditions while creating something new and memorable.

Beyond the food, Smoke on the Water embraced the setting that makes Lake Murray one of South Carolina’s most beloved destinations. The combination of waterfront views, live entertainment, a curated beer garden, and a relaxed lakeside atmosphere created an experience that felt distinctly Southern. It encouraged guests to slow down, gather with friends and family, and enjoy an afternoon centered around good food and good company.

Perhaps most importantly, Smoke on the Water served as a reminder that the Columbia and Lake Murray region continues to emerge as a destination for culinary tourism. Events like this attract visitors, introduce them to local businesses, and showcase the talent that exists throughout the Midlands. When nationally recognized chefs share the stage with hometown pitmasters, it signals that our region has earned a place in the broader conversation about Southern food.

For barbecue enthusiasts, food travelers, and anyone who appreciates authentic Southern culture, Smoke on the Water delivered an experience worth savoring. With Lake Murray as the backdrop, there may have been no better place to celebrate the people, traditions, and flavors that continue to shape South Carolina’s barbecue story. •
