Grants Pass is the kind of place where you can paraglide in the morning, fish the Rogue in the afternoon, and walk into a seriously good dinner at the end of the day with your hiking boots on. Tucked into Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley, it sits at the intersection of two things that don't always go together: genuine outdoor adventure and genuinely great food.

The mountains are real. The river is wild. The wine country is twenty minutes west. And the restaurant scene has quietly been making big moves. One place in particular is worth building a trip around.

Cartwright's Taprock sits right on the Rogue River, and the view from the deck will make you want to cancel your drive home. The Cartwright family has been feeding Southern Oregon since Orlin Cartwright opened his first butcher shop in the 1950s, and that same no-nonsense commitment to honest food, locally sourced and done well, is what you'll find on the menu today.

This Grants Pass icon has both warm log cabin charm and chic farm-to-fork style. Whether you’re basking on the patio on a sunny day or perched beside the tall dining room windows on a cozy evening, the riverfront views always deliver. Opening early and closing late, it’s the perfect place to fuel up before an afternoon of wine tasting or dine leisurely after a long day of hiking and exploring. With Pacific Northwest seafood, premium meats, and farm-fresh produce from the valley you can practically see out the window, it's the kind of meal that tastes like the place it came from. Which around here means it tastes pretty great.

Grab a table. Watch the river. Order whatever sounds most delicious. Repeat.

The thing about Grants Pass is that the outdoors aren't a backdrop: they're the whole point. Tandem paraglide off Woodrat Mountain and get a bird's-eye view of the valley. Book a guided steelhead float and spend a morning on the river with someone who actually knows where the fish are. Ride or hike the Dollar Mountain Trail System when you need to decompress between meals. Head west into the Applegate Valley and taste your way through some of Southern Oregon's best tasting rooms.

When the day winds down, downtown Grants Pass has plenty left to offer. Catch live music at any one of the venues, lounges, or brewpubs featuring both local and touring talent. Join the locals and show off your skills at karaoke, trivia, or one of the many popular open mic nights throughout the week. Whatever your interests, there’s something fun to do after dinner.

Speaking of dinner, the delicious cuisine doesn’t end with Cartwright’s Taprock. Carson’s Bistro offers reservation-only fine dining with an extensive selection of local wine and trademark warm hospitality. If you're after something more laid-back, the iconic and extensive menu at Horny Goat has you covered (where else can you find grits, pho, and schnitzel all in one place?). And if you’re looking to fuel up before heading out on the trail, Ma Mosa’s is a local’s favorite for farm-to-table brunch and a wide selection of mimosas.

Save some time before you leave to wander the independently owned boutiques along 6th Street. Grants Pass's downtown shopping scene is the kind that rewards slow browsing: local makers, one-of-a-kind finds, and none of the chains. Pick up something to take home that actually came from somewhere.

Let the valley wear you out in the best possible way. Then find a table. In Grants Pass, you've always got a good one waiting.
